Malware Problem Fixed

Recently we’ve had a few readers report some suspicious activity on the site, and after digging into it I found out our host was apparently attacked with malware that targeted sites run on PHP. Basically the entire site was compromised, and I just spent about 3 hours deleting files and removing malicious script from…everywhere. But the site now has a clean bill of health, so everything should be all good now. If you see any more suspicious activity, please let us know right away!

  1. EEK! Good thing it was caught.

  2. Yay, now I can see the site again. ^_^

  3. Hi there,

Home & Characters were fine, but when trying to go to Archives, Opera did display a warning for possible malware infection.
I don’t know if that is only a not-updated-database-kind-of-warning resulting of already taken care of infection, or if there actually is a new one.
Just wanted to let you know.

    1. Hey Ash.

Just checked the archives section myself. No suspicious activity has been found by my anti-malware software. Also, I did look for open connections towards my system, there was only one, the website itself. This means, that there is no ACTIVE malware on this part of the website. Still, traces of it “can” be forgotten to remove, or failed to notice, but without an active executable, it can’t do anything.

It is also possible that anti-virus software displays warnings by using an extension build into your webbrowser. As soon as the site is malware-free, and new database updates are received for the anti-virus software, there should be no problems.

  4. Huzzah! Kudos in your victorious hunt! x)

  5. Aaaah, I was wondering what was up with that…I stopped by the other day and Kaspersky immediately lit up with a warning. Good to hear it’s taken care of now, though!

  6. I was a bit suspicious when I came up to visit the site at one point this last week and Norton flipped out, blocked down the site, and claimed to have blocked an attack on my computer. I’m glad everything’s taken care of! ^^

  7. Wow. I had no idea any of this was going on. o_0

These are the times I’m thankful my laptop is a Mac. XD

    1. Contrary to the widespread misinformation about Macs, Macs are NOT immune to being attacked by malware and other similar attacks.

    2. I also had no idea this was going on on the site either, though. That’s because of my handy dandy no-script add-on, though (don’t worry, it doesn’t affect ads. I have it set to that on purpose). :3

  8. I think something may be wrong again. When I try to go to Archives my browser shows me a malware warning. I thought I should let you know.

    1. Have you tried clearing your cache? I’ve checked and double checked, and I’ve used a few sites that scan other sites for malware and they have found nothing suspicious on here anymore.

  9. YAY~ congrats on fixing up the site! I’m sure that wasn’t an easy thing to do.

  10. I’m really glad it was caught. I haven’t seen anything suspicious but I’ll make sure to let you know if I do.

  11. I cannot see pages 216 and on. However I can see all pervious pages.

    1. “However I can see all pervious pages.”
      Bad typo. o.o

  12. I cannot see any of chapter 9 ^^;

  13. Hi. It’s probably not related to the Malware problem, but I cannot see page 218 or the thumbnail for it. Up until now I have been able to see every page, and at least the page for the link-back (to the jingle) still works.

  14. I can’t see the latest updates. All it says is “Thumbnail NOT found”. I don’t know if the malware thing is doing this or its just my computer :\

  15. I’m afraid that there may be a problem with the code again. :X The site’s loading extremely slowly, and I’m getting some peculiar ‘Content Encoding Error’ messages when I try to look at any pages. Hope it gets fixed soon!
